ImageYet another day draws to a close in Bahrain this evening as hundreds of blue-collared workers return to their accommodation in the heart of the capital, Manama. These low-paid workers, the backbone of all development in the country, are often exploited by their employers and unscrupulous landlords who, respectively, pay them meager wages and charge “exorbitant” rents for just providing bed space in ramshackle and dilapidated buildings.
However, in the recent past, due to several government initiatives and pro-active involvement of non-governmental organisations, the situation is slowly but surely improving. Steps are also under way to set up special self-contained “labour villages” for these workers and laws are already in place to award stiff penalties to rogue employers.
