Tree Gets a Life

Desert 461Bahrain’s legendary landmark and tourist attraction is finally getting a life. The first phase of the Tree of Life Development Project, initiated by the Culture Ministry, is nearing completion and will ensure the area becomes a beehive of activity for tourists and residents. Plans for an amphitheater, a viewing area and a small traditional bazaar are well on track.
The tree, said to be around 500 years old (a claim contested by some), had recently fallen on bad days, neglected and uncared for, with only a caretaker-cum-guide-cum-watchman at the spot.
“Cult” worshipers have also been accused in recent years of performing rituals on the tree, leading to it being scarred with fire at several places.
